Student Access and Support Services

Mission Statement 

The guiding principle of Student Access and Support Services (SASS) affirms the need for access and inclusion as an essential part of our diverse society and the campus community in which we live, work, and learn. Therefore, in partnership with colleagues across our campus, we will work together to assure access to all classes, programs, activities and services. We are committed to fostering a learning environment at Mills that is aware, inclusive, usable, and transformative for all students.

Services and Accommodations

Student Access and Support Services (SASS) currently provides the following services and accommodations:

Academic Accommodations

  • extended time on assignments
  • extended time on exams
  • exams in distraction-reduced environment
  • occasional absences
  • reduced course load
  • use of computer during lectures
  • use of computer during exams

Services

  • notetakers
  • scribes

Small Equipment/Auxiliary Aids

  • hearing amplification aids
  • magnifying equipment

Student Access and Support Services serves a liaison between students with disabilities and the faculty. Other responsibilities include interpreting documentation, assessing students' needs for services, and accommodations.

Reasonable Accommodations

Mills is committed to serving its students with disabilities and access needs and makes every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for students unless doing so would be an undue hardship or cause a fundamental alteration to a program.

Accessing Services

Students with disabilities who need academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, physical access, or other types of accommodations should contact Student Access and Support Services (SASS) in the Division of Student Life.

The process is:

1. Email sass@mills.edu stating that you are seeking accommodations and would like to schedule a meeting. If you have it, you can be productive and provide your medical documentation via email, to the Cowell desk, or via fax (510.430.3235).

In your intake meeting with a SASS staff member, you will discuss your needs and accommodations. After that meeting, you will be able to update your accommodations each semester online. 

2. Register for your accommodations online as soon as possible utilizing the instructions here.

3. If your accommodations include extended time and/or a distraction reduced environment for testing, you will need to make reservations for each test you take through your student portal. Instructions are here: Exam Accommodations FAQ.
