Domestic Study Opportunities

Rather than studying internationally, some students choose to study away at different institutions in the United States. These US study away programs offer students the opportunity to learn in a different environment and broaden their perspective beyond Mills while remaining in the US. Students who are interested in participating in a Domestic Study opportunities should make an appointment with the Academic Records Office by emailing


Sophomores or Juniors who have completed at least one semester at Mills College and have a minimum 3.0 Mills cumulative grade point average at the time of application are eligible to participate in the program.

Academic Credit

Mills accepts credits earned by a student while on an exchange/visiting program in accordance with current transfer policies.

Application Process

Domestic Study Application (75k, pdf)

Complete and return Exchange/Visiting Application Form which requires the following signatures:
Faculty Advisor 
Director of Residential Life (if you are a residential student at Mills) 
Financial Aid Office 
Student Accounts Office 

If there are more qualified applicants than there are spaces available, applications will be approved on a first come basis. 

If your application has been approved, a nomination letter from Academic Records will be mailed to the school to which you have applied. A copy of your Mills transcript and application will also be forwarded to the appropriate exchange/visiting college. 

You will receive written notification of your acceptance directly from the exchange/visiting college. 

Once accepted, complete an Intent to Participate Form and submit to Academic Records so that the College is aware of your intention to study away.

Deadlines:  The deadline to apply for domestic exchange is October 1st for the spring semester and March 15th for the fall semester. 

Note: There are additional application materials that need to be completed by students applying to the Washington Semester Program and to Barnard College.
