CAPS Scope of Services

Mills Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff provide short-term individual and group therapy, intake assessments, community outreach, and psychopharmacological treatment. We also have urgent, same-day appointments available.

Under the supervision of the director, assistant director, and staff at CAPS, trainees provide a variety of mental health services in conjunction with the Division of Student Life. Mills College CAPS uses a short-term therapy model.

Scope of Services

CAPS provides individual and group counseling for students, as well as community circles, consultation and outreach services to support your wellness and success. Our professional staff wants to help guide you to find the services that are a good fit for your needs.

CAPS invites students to schedule an initial intake appointment with a CAPS therapist. During this initial intake, the therapist will assist students in obtaining the appropriate services to address their concerns by recommending services within CAPS or in the community. Student concerns that can be addressed within a brief model of therapy are usually referred to CAPS, while concerns requiring longer-term or specialized therapy and/or medication are best addressed in the community.

CAPS utilizes a short-term model of therapy for individual sessions in order to use its resources most effectively and assist students in addressing issues common in a college setting.

Some of the issues that are commonly addressed in short-term counseling at CAPS are:

  • Personal Issues: Stress and anxiety, depression, anger, loneliness, guilt, self-esteem, grief and loss
  • Relationship Issues: Romantic relationship difficulties, sexual concerns, roommate conflicts, difficulties with co-workers, issues with family or friends
  • Developmental Issues: Identity development, adjustment to college, life transitions, cultural concerns
  • Impacts of Interpersonal and Systemic Oppression: racial trauma, racialized and gendered violence, anti-Blackness, experiences of homophobia & transphobia, discrimination or bias in the classroom and on campus
  • Gender Affirmation Procedure Assessments for Letters of Support
  • Academic Concerns: Performance anxiety, perfectionism, underachievement, motivation, concerns about future school and work
  • Other Issues: Spiritual concerns, body image/food preoccupation, healthy lifestyle choices, alcohol and drug use concerns, sexual assault

Service Limitations

Students whose mental health needs cannot be met within short-term counseling or who require a particular type of service not offered at CAPS, or need to meet with a clinician more than once a week, are referred to community resources. Students may be referred to resources and services outside of CAPS or off campus at any time, within the discretion of CAPS staff.

Concerns best served in the community are those requiring seeing a therapist once a week or more or seeing a therapist for more than eight counseling sessions, and/or issues that require comprehensive or specialized services. These commonly include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • History of multiple psychiatric hospitalizations
  • Chronic suicidality and/or self-injury behaviors
  • History of suicide attempts
  • Indications that short-term therapy may be detrimental or non-beneficial
  • Evidence or risk of progressive deterioration in mental or emotional functioning, requiring intensive intervention beyond what Mills CAPS offers
  • Manifestations of psychotic symptoms without consistent use of medication for stabilization
  • Inability to provide or difficulty providing the necessary information to thoroughly assess symptoms
  • Other issues requiring specialized services not available through CAPS, such as:
    • Significant drug and/or alcohol problems, such as substance dependence and/or past failed treatments
    • Significant or long-standing eating disorder with no period of remission, no previous treatment, or that may pose a medical danger
  • Request for psychological evaluation for the purpose of employment clearance or other nonacademic needs
  • Services to fulfill students' court-mandated assessment or treatment requirements
