MILLS COLLEGE RECEIVES FEDERAL FUNDING FOR INSTITUTE FOR CIVIC LEADERSHIP

Oakland, CA - Mills College was approved for $320,000 in federal funds as part of Congressional Spending Bill FY2005 - Appropriations Act (H.R. 4818) – approved by the House and Senate on November 20, 2004.  The funding was appropriated for the College’s Institute for Civic Leadership (ICL) under the omnibus spending bill, divisions F (Labor/HHS/ED) and III (ED).

A rigorous fall semester program for female college students nationwide, ICL advances the civic leadership capacities of women and promotes the civic and democratic purposes of higher education.  Fifteen women are selected each year to take academic courses, participate in internships, and receive mentoring - all related to their participation in the democratic process.

“Developing women’s leadership is critical, and I am pleased to have helped secure this funding that will enable Mills’ Institute for Civic Leadership to carry on this important work,” noted Barbara Lee, Congresswoman (D-CA).

“We are thrilled to receive these funds to enhance our programming for college women and to expand our research on civic engagement strategies in primary and higher education,” said Kristi Schutjer-Mance, ICL director. “We are especially grateful to Congresswoman Lee for her work to secure this support for advancing women’s leadership development.”

Established in 2000, ICL was recognized in 2002 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as one of 21 exemplary programs throughout the country to participate in their Political Engagement Project. The Project addresses the progressive disengagement of youths from politics.
