Student Government

An important goal of an undergraduate education at Mills is to develop leadership skills. One of the best ways to learn these skills is to actively participate in student government. Mills College Student GovernmentThe Associated Students of Mills College (ASMC) is run by an executive board of elected and appointed positions. Under the governance of a student-drafted Constitution, the board manages and disburses an annual budget that supports more than 50 student organizations, student publications, campus-wide events, and various student initiatives.

From academic issues to social events to honor code concerns, the ASMC is the voice of the student body to the College administration. During our weekly meetings, and conversations with the Board of Trustees and college officers, we carry the voices of those we represent to ensure all decisions are made with the input of all students. The Finance committee, for example, is made up of several senators who help work to budget funding for clubs and organizations run by graduate and undergraduate students, campus-wide events and student initiatives. Senators on the full ASMC board in turn help vote on these decisions as they pertain to the entire Mills student body.

Undergraduate and graduate ASMC members have had the privilege of voting on a multitude of student-led initiatives to better shape the Mills community. In the past, this has included such things as helping special fund students to attend leadership conferences by covering conference fees, initiating a Green for Green Fee to promote student-led sustainability efforts, and supporting cultural graduations, such as Lavender Grad. Our ASMC budget is comprised of student funds and you have a say in where and how those funds should be allocated.

If you’d like to run for a seat or have your student group receive funding from the ASMC, email the ASMC executive board at to learn more.
