TO: Mills College Faculty and Staff
FROM: Beth Hillman
SUBJECT: Mills: Inside and Out

Dear all,

With the new academic year in full swing this week, the federal government issued two announcements about higher education policy, both with troubling implications for students at Mills and across the country. The first indicated a potential end to established legal protections for some undocumented students, the second a change in federal rules related to preventing and responding to sexual assault on campus.

Today, our Division of Student Life (DSL) will hold an immigration rights panel at noon in GSB 101 to promote awareness about federal changes in the protections offered to students registered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DSL reached out to all Mills students this week to provide information and support, and the leaders of our Latinx task force have met to consider what actions Mills can take to maintain an inclusive environment in the face of these changes. We will continue to listen, inform our community, and communicate our support for DACA.

Yesterday, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced a plan to move away from the current Department of Education guidelines for how colleges and universities handle sexual harassment and sexual violence cases under the federal Title IX policy. Mills stands firmly in support of policies that enable us to prevent, and respond more effectively to, gender harassment and sexual violence. We will continue to listen to student leaders and activists as we seek to learn and implement best practices. I am currently serving with other industry and higher education leaders on a study committee of the National Academies of Science, Medicine, and Engineering that is actively engaged with understanding potential changes in federal enforcement and their impact on college campuses.

Finally, an update on our enrollment this fall: As of today, we have 1,292 students enrolled and cleared to pursue their studies at Mills, leaving only thirty registered but with their student account not yet cleared through the M Center. I'm grateful that so many students and families have committed to advancing their goals through an education at Mills, and that our financial aid, registrar, and enrollment professionals are helping to make that possible.
