TO: Mills College Faculty and Staff
FROM: Beth Hillman
SUBJECT: Mills: Inside and Out

Dear all,

As September comes to a close and many prepare for the fasting and prayers of Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement that beings at sundown today, leaders across higher education continue to respond to shifts in federal policy that affect our students and institutions. The American Council on Education sent a letter to the federal government requesting an extension of the filing deadline for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) renewal for students who live in the areas affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Students in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Florida, and Texas may not be able to file in time if the current timeline is enforced.

With big-time college sports are enduring another sordid scandal this week, you can be proud of our Mills College Cyclones and Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation department. Mills' cross country and tennis teams are in action this weekend at the Mustang Challenge Invitational, George Fox University and Pacific Lutheran University

Provost and Dean of Faculty Chinyere Oparah was also recognized this week for pathbreaking scholarship in partnership with a local community organization. For her "paradigm-shifting" study of black women's experiences of childbirth, and her advocacy of models of maternal and infant health that led to "significant social change and improvement in childbirth," Dr. Oparah was named Visionary of the Year at the 2017 Birthing Justice Forum and MCH Champion Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles.

During a time in which challenges abound, there is much to be proud of here at Mills.
