TO: Mills College Faculty and Staff
FROM: Beth Hillman
SUBJECT: Mills: Inside and Out

Dear all,

If you're admiring the nerve and skill of the athletes competing in the Pyeongchang Olympics, you should know that Mills student athletes have had their own impressive month, including a record-setting winter for the swim team. Mills swimmers set individual, pool, and Mills records at the Liberal Arts Championships at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.  Melissa Berkay and Morgan Leishman were both named to the All-Conference Team for the third consecutive year. Equally impressive, our team was selected to the Scholar All-America team of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Susan Teeter, president of the CSCAA and former head swimming coach at Princeton University, wrote that Mills' swimmers demonstrate "the confidence, courage, perseverance, and teamwork that will help them throughout life."

The Mills College pool is a hub of activity even in the winter, including the masters' swim team and swim lessons at all levels offered through our new e-marketplace. Two of the teenagers in my household are enrolled in the lifeguard certification course that starts this weekend!

For everyone working on the projects and programs that both support our students today and prepare Mills to thrive in the years ahead,  consider reading Brian Mitchell's thoughtful commentary in The Hechinger Report this week on the ingenuity and creativity that will help institutions succeed despite challenges. Those of you who had a chance to hear Patricia McGuire, president of Trinity Washington University, address our trustees last Friday (presentation attached here if you didn't) heard stories of how one women's college has seized opportunities to preserve and pursue its mission. Mills is part of a long tradition of creating change at historically women's colleges. I hope you'll join us at the Mills Commons on March 1 (4:00 pm, GSB Room 101) for an update on last week's Board of Trustees' meeting to learn more about the many initiatives underway.

Finally, please get ready to support our undocumented students by setting aside time next Wednesday, February 28, to join the Friends of Dreamers National Call-In Day of the Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration. More information about how to call Congress and support dreamers will be forthcoming next week from Chief of Staff and Vice President for External Relations Renee Jadushlever.
