FROM: Beth Hillman
SUBJECT: Mills: Inside and Out

Dear all,

The past week has brought much excitement to campus, with tonight's celebration of the activism of the legendary Dolores Huerta still to come. We expect some 800 attendees at this evening's screening of the documentary Dolores, where we'll be joined by Ms. Huerta and Congresswoman Barbara Lee '73 as well as Camila Chavez '98, executive director of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and Dolores’ daughter. The opening comments by Congresswoman Lee and Ms. Huerta will be followed by the film. We are grateful to Professors Priya Kandaswamy and Andrew Flores and student Yoly Jimenez for facilitating a conversation with Ms. Huerta and Camila Chavez following the film. It promises to be a memorable event.

Last Saturday, Professor Ellen Spertus and her team of enterprising scholars, students, and tech experts brought together 200+ womxn of color and 40+ attendees of an allies workshop at Tech Intersections, a sold-out conference that attracted so much interest it will become an annual event. See the program for more information and to see the event logo, which combines the letters WOC (women of color) with the power icon and was created by Mills computer science undergraduate student (and attendee) Deana Bui; see also their Twitter feed and Instagram posts.

I'm grateful to Professor Spertus, her sister organizers Idalin Bobe, MBA ‘13, Maira Benjamin, MA '91, and Tiffany Price of the Kapor Center and all of the sponsors listed in the event program, as well as our in-house team of Elisabeth Wade and Cynthia Jackson in the Provost's Office, Sherisse Dozier, Dyana Curreri-Ermatinger, and Jeff Jackanicz in the Office of Institutional Advancement, Raymond Chow in the Mail & Copy Center, Tayler Hammond at the GSB, and Professor Ajuan Mance.

After being on the road much of this month, I was glad to be back on campus yesterday. When I walked through Adams Plaza on my way to Mills Halls in the morning, the wall across from the mail room was painted bright white; when I went to lunch at the tea shop at mid-day, the wall was being transformed into a vibrant canvas by our students. Many thanks to the students who designed and painted, and to staff in DSL, specifically in the Center for Leadership, Equity and Excellence, and facilities staff who supported their efforts.
