TO: Mills College Faculty and Staff
FROM: Beth Hillman
SUBJECT: Mills: Inside and Out

Dear all,

Today, Mills hosts a President/Trustee Retreat organized by our accreditors, WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), in the Lokey School of Business and Public Policy. The event brings together higher education leaders from Northern California to focus on successful governance models, and includes presentations from Richard Legon, president of the Association of Governing Boards, and Mary Ellen Petrisko, president of WSCUC, who will be succeeded as WSCUC president by former Mills Trustee Jamienne Studley on January 1, 2018. I'm looking forward to hearing more from expert observers about the potential consequences of the tax bill, the Higher Education Reauthorization Act, and DACA and other undocumented student legislation, which continue to be debated on Capitol Hill this week.

Meanwhile, our finance leadership team is headed to Indian Wells this weekend as Mills co-hosts the 2017 PACCON conference with Saint Mary's College of California. They'll learn more about what's happening across 29 small, independent colleges and universities on the West Coast, including which schools are posting enrollment gains and how they plan to respond to the political and economic challenges ahead.

I also want to acknowledge the impact of the terrible fires in Southern California that are threatening many friends and families of Mills this week. Mount Saint Mary's University, a member of the women's college coalition, is one of the institutions that has been forced to evacuate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected and to the first responders working to contain the fires.

I'll close with congratulations to Achy Obejas, distinguished writer and Mills professor, whose The Tower of Antilles was recently nominated for the first-ever Aspen Words Literary Prize. Kudos to Achy and everyone on our faculty whose scholarship and creative work sets the standard for excellence.
