Mills: Inside and Out

Presidential Communication
December 1, 2017

TO: Mills College Faculty and Staff
FROM: Beth Hillman
SUBJECT: Mills: Inside and Out

Dear all,

This morning, Congress seems likely to adopt a tax bill with devastating consequences for higher education. With the actual contents of the bill still uncertain, and challenges to its many provisions likely, it will be some time before we know its full impact. We already know, however, that Mills will have to be creative in breaking the new barriers the changes will pose to aspiring students and their families.

We'll face this challenge with the benefit of having enacted a tuition reset  that confirms our commitment to access and excellence, and with a powerhouse of a team in finance that just led us through the arduous annual audit process with terrific results: A resounding affirmation of Mills’ fiscal accountability, regulatory compliance, and commitment to financial stability. I'm grateful to Maria Cammarata, vice president for finance and administration, and Elaine Clark, associate vice president for finance, and her dedicated team of financial professionals for their integrity, vision, and dedication in helping Mills navigate the stormy fiscal climate that prevails across higher education.

The close of our FY17 audit comes at a time of other endings too: This evening is the winter celebration for Mills' December 2017 graduates, hosted by the AAMC in Reinhardt Alumnae House, and the fall semester is nearly over, with but one full week of classes left. The sudden passing of beloved Mills professor Steve Givant earlier this month, and the beautiful message that his wife and professor Susan Wang wrote about her family's loss and Steve's legacy, has made me pause and recognize how many people at Mills, past and present, have invested in our students and their future. Tax bills aside, those committed to pursuing knowledge and truth, and to sharing the tools by which others can do the same, are the reason that I have faith that Mills will play a crucial role in responding to the challenges ahead.
