FROM: Beth Hillman
SUBJECT: Mills: Inside and Out

Dear all,

This week has been a time of intensive preparation for the return of Mills students that will commence this weekend. Community members convened across campus to discuss the new initiatives and generate energy and insight for the new academic year. Our student leaders are completing an intensive orientation with the Division of Student Life to prepare for their responsibilities, and our hard-working facilities staff is finalizing summer projects that restored and revitalized key areas of campus, including the student lounges at Adams Plaza. Tomorrow, dozens of Mills volunteers will participate in helping our students move in and get ready for the fall semester.

At the College officers' annual retreat on Wednesday, we developed four key themes—student success, a collaborative, innovative culture, a sustainable foundation, and visibility—that will guide our work on the many Mills projects now underway or soon to be launched. Today, I'm spending the day with our faculty and provost team at their fall retreat. I've learned about the development of an exciting signature experience for undergraduates, the accreditation process of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission, and the promise of e-Portfolios to enhance student learning and development.

At a time when tensions around campus speakers and events continue to grow at some college and university campuses, the Association of Governing Boards (AGB) just released a new report, Freedom of Speech on Campus. While AGB focuses primarily on educating board members, its guidance on this topic is broadly relevant to those of us who care about protecting civil and open dialogue, academic freedom, and free speech. Each of us has a role to play in preserving Mills' commitment to engaged learning, equity and inclusion, and the pursuit of truth and understanding.
