Course Description

REL 180A
Judaism through Film: Identity and Religion through the Cinematic Lens
Spring

Introduces students to the cultural history of modern Jews and Judaisms through the cinematic lens. Considers Jewish textual, linguistic, and liturgical practices to interrogate the limits and consequences of their onscreen representation. Viewing fiction film, documentary, and television shows will pave the way for exploring key concepts in modern Jewish history. The course addresses broader questions in current scholarship: the limits of representation; the formation of stereotypical identities through visual media; and how the status of "otherness" shape "national" and "religious" imagery
