Course Description

MUS 002
Music in Western Culture
Fall

An examination of selected U.S. and European musical literature in the context of the arts, culture, and society. Students study genres and styles from the Middle Ages to the present (chant, symphony, folk song and spiritual, opera, and electronic music), and consider how the evolution of instruments, musical forms, and performance practices reflects culture, time, and place. The course aims to make more informed and engaged listeners for a wide range of musical experiences.
Offered every other year beginning 2019-20.
