Mills College Collection

The Mills College Collection is the archive of Mills College. It includes publications issued by the College, publications about the College, and records and documentation created in the operation of the College. The collection chronicles the history of the College and consists of both primary and secondary sources. Formats include books, pamphlets, manuscripts, photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, videos, audio recordings, etc. Materials are collected by gift (e.g., from alumnae), transfer (e.g., from an on-campus office), and solicitation (usually by the Special Collections Curator or the Library Director). Selected items such as yearbooks are duplicated in the circulating collection. In general, two to three copies of each item are kept when available.

Related collections include masters’ theses, faculty publications, alumnae publications, and papers of individuals (e.g., Aurelia Henry Reinhardt Papers).

The physical organization of the Mills College Collection follows roughly the organizational structure of the College itself. Intellectual access is provided in a number of ways. These include collection level records on MINERVA, a finding aid that provides a detailed overview of the organization as well as a detailed alphabetical index, and inventories. Record groups are organized chronologically or alphabetically. Dewey Decimal call numbers are used for book or book-like publications (e.g., the annual catalog of courses); record group numbers from 0 to 28 are used for the remainder of the collection.

Historical holdings include biography files, historical articles, and books related the College.

Materials from the following offices and organizations are currently collected: Board of Trustees; Office of the President; Office of the Provost & Dean of the Faculty; Undergraduate Admission Office; Division of Student Life; Office of Institutional Advancement; Finance & Administration & Treasurer’s Office; Central Systems and Administrative Computing; Fine Arts Division; Letters Division; Natural Sciences Division; Social Sciences Division; Education Division; Physical Plant; Associated Students of Mills College (ASMC); Alumnae Association (AAMC); EF (International Language School); English Center for International Women (ECIW); Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). Within these and other main records groups is the output of many other offices, departments, etc. Additional historical material is collected as it becomes available usually through gifts.

Current publications collected on a regular basis include the undergraduate and graduate catalogs; the Mills Weekly; the Mills Quarterly; the Walrus; the yearbook; various newsletters; promotional material; announcements of events sponsored by departments; organizations, etc.; publications related to commencement and other ceremonial occasions; publications related to specific building including some blueprints; etc.
