Alumnae/i Profile

Sonsherée Giles, MFA

Pauline JenningsSonsherée Giles is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and costume designer, born in New Orleans, LA. She relocated to Oakland, CA to attend Mills College where she received her MFA in performance/choreography. She has toured and performed for audiences throughout the United States, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria and Russia and has taught contemporary dance in public school systems, universities, institutions and dance festivals throughout the country.

She makes dances that investigate movement repetition, chance operation, landscapes, art history, and daily life experiences. Her dancing is indirectly influenced by a long-term relationship with the physical act of running and yoga. She has recently formed a container for her choreography called this sweet nothing in which she collaborates with a collective of artists to create intermedia dance works. Her work has been generously supported by Zellerbach Family Foundation, CLOROX Company Foundation, CA$H grant, and East Bay Fund for Individual Artists.

What about your Mills experience have you continued to benefit from since graduating?

I continue to benefit from the community I met at Mills. I still collaborate with musicians from the Music Department who were students at the same time with me. I am still great friends with dancers that I went to school with at that time and I still work with many of those dancers and musicians from Mills. It has been a rich and rewarding experience and felt I have made lifetime friendships and a plethora of connections in the art community in the Bay Area.

How has dance helped shape your current work or passions?

My passion has always been dance. I am fortunate because I am able to dance, make dances, collaborate with dancers and musicians, see dance, and makes costumes for dance as my work. I feel really blessed to do what I love.
