Domestic Exchange Opportunities

Many students enjoy studying in another part of the United States through an exchange/visiting program. You gain the valuable experience of living and learning in a different environment, and you build new relationships that expand your network. If you're interested in pursuing a domestic study option, please make an appointment with the Registrar and Records Office by emailing

Sophomores or juniors who have completed at least one semester at Mills College and have a minimum 3.0 Mills cumulative grade point average at the time of application are eligible to participate in the program.

Academic Credit

Mills accepts credits earned by a student while on an exchange/visiting program in accordance with current transfer policies.

Financial Aid

For students participating in a Mills-affiliated domestic study program, federal and state sources of financial aid will transfer to assist with program costs. The amount of a student's federal and/or state aid available for this purpose will be determined by the M Center; federal and/or state sources of financial aid will be adjusted according to the costs of the program in keeping with federal and state regulations. Institutional scholarships, i.e. merit-based and need-based Mills scholarships, cannot be transferred toward the cost of a domestic study program. Costs for travel usually are not included in published program fees and are the responsibility of the participating student. Please note that students are ALWAYS responsible for the initial deposit required by all international study programs. Mills will not pay this fee, nor reimburse students for it.

Application Process

Complete and return your Domestic Study Application (PDF) which requires signatures from the following individuals and offices:

  • Faculty Advisor
  • Director of Residential Life (if you are a residential student at Mills)
  • Financial Aid Office
  • Student Accounts Office

If there are more qualified applicants than there are spaces available, applications will be approved on a first-come, first-served basis.

If your application has been approved, a nomination letter from Academic Records will be mailed to the school you have applied to along with a copy of your Mills transcript and application.

You will receive written notification of your acceptance directly from the exchange/visiting college.

Once accepted, complete an Intent to Participate Form (PDF) and submit to the Registrar and Records Office so that the College is aware of your intention to study away.

The deadline to apply for domestic exchange is October 1 for the spring semester and March 15 for the fall semester

Note: There are additional application materials that need to be completed by students applying to the Washington Semester Program and to Barnard College.
