Peer tutors provide subject-specific support for students seeking guidance with their academic work. For instance, a math student can meet with a peer tutor to work through difficult concepts or problem sets. Similarly, a psychology student struggling with readings can meet with a tutor to discuss theories. Tutoring may occur in a one-on-one setting or as a group tutorial, depending on need.
Tutors work collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure each student receives holistic support. They aim to personalize instruction for their students, promote independent learning, and help students express their ideas and concepts. Peer tutors never do the work for the student; rather, they offer support and guidance. At all times tutors maintain confidentiality and are respectful and sensitive to individual differences.
Each peer tutor may provide up to 10 hours of tutoring per week, but they are not required to work all those hours. For example, some weeks they are fully booked with tutorials, and other times they will not meet with any students; it depends on student demand and the tutor's availability.
Subject tutoring appointments may be held between 9:00 am and 11:00 pm seven days a week. Tutors enter their availability and manage appointments on Accudemia.
The Office of Learning, Advising, and Balance (the LAB) is open from 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. After-hours appointments may be held in the library or other public study areas on campus.
The LAB recognizes all Mills College breaks and holidays. Tutoring ends on the last day of classes each semester.
Tutors are students with at least a 3.0 GPA in the subject they are tutoring, with an overall cumulative GPA of 2.8 and above. Selection of tutors is based mainly on faculty recommendations. Tutors must have strong interpersonal skills, be able to maintain confidentiality at all times, and be sensitive to the needs of students seeking peer tutoring. Students may not tutor for a course in which they are concurrently enrolled.
If you think you’d make a good peer tutor for a particular course, please contact the professor. They may send a recommendation for you to email@example.com; we also solicit nominations before the semester begins. Once we receive the nomination, we will send information on next steps.
New tutors, except for graduate students, must enroll in a one- or two-credit training course (COLL 041/042 Peer-Guided Learning) during their first semester of tutoring and will tutor for credit rather than for pay. Once tutors have completed the course requirements, they will be eligible to tutor for pay.
All new peer tutors, including graduate students, must attend a mandatory Saturday orientation. This session is typically held in the morning on the second Saturday of the semester, unless that Saturday is a holiday; then it will be held on the third Saturday. All tutors must also compete online training on anti-harassment polices and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
